Man dies after falling into trench

Sunday, July 27, 2014.

"Some workmen were busy digging a trench when one of the workers inadvertently fell into the trench ... and part of the wall collapsed on top of him - it was dirt," he said.

Inspector Bragg said the other workers immediately tried to help the 64-year-old man.

"I'm led to believe they had some difficulty in getting him out at first and they used some of the heavy machinery to try and clear the way," he said.

He said Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers were able to pull the man out of the trench.

However, he said ambulance officers could not revive the man.

Inspector Bragg said everyone at the scene were quite distressed by the incident.

"But I can only imagine how the workers must feel because many of these people know each other," he said.

"There's family members in there that also work together, and they're absolutely distraught, as they would be."

Inspector Bragg said Workplace Health and Safety Queensland are conducting an investigation as well as the police forensic crash unit.

He said a report will then be prepared for the coroner
